Optimizing the Settling Process
Clarifiers are the workhorses of solid-liquid separation in wastewater treatment. However, hydraulic inefficiencies—such as density currents and thermal stratification—often compromise their performance. When heavier solids-laden water plunges to the floor and sweeps rapidly up the outer wall, it causes "short-circuiting," carrying solids over the effluent weirs.
Preventing solids carryover is essential for meeting strict effluent limits and protecting downstream processes like UV disinfection.
The Role of Density Current Baffles
Engineered Density Current Baffles (DCBs), such as those manufactured from durable fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP), provide a highly effective solution. Installed along the peripheral wall of circular clarifiers, these baffles intercept the strong density currents rising from the tank floor.
By redirecting the upward flow inward, the baffles dissipate kinetic energy and force suspended solids back into the settling zone. This simple yet profound mechanical upgrade can increase clarifier capacity by up to 30%, significantly reduce Total Suspended Solids (TSS) in the effluent, and eliminate the need for costly tank expansions.
